Gini Wijnaldum has revealed how the Liverpool dressing room reacted to his decision to leave the club this summer.
The midfielder will leave at the end of his contract, having failed to come to an agreement with the Reds, and would move closer to Ligue 1 giant Paris Saint-Germain.
Currently preparing to captain the Netherlands at Euro 2020, the 30-year-old has revealed he will explain his exit from Anfield after the tournament.
And remembering sharing his decision with his teammates, he admitted that they all understand his decision not to sign a new deal with Liverpool.
“Now is not the time to talk about Liverpool and why I left,” he said. Voetbal International. “Someday I will, after the tournament. Then everyone will understand why things went the way they did.
“That’s the problem, people look at it from the outside and don’t understand it. Many fans ask me why I didn’t just accept Liverpool’s offer to extend my contract.

“I will explain it after the tournament, because now only Oranje matters. What I mean is that the people at the training complex, the club employees and my fellow players would have liked to keep me.
“I told them more. After that, they completely understood my decision. It’s important to me.”
Wijnaldum also admitted he was still emotional to leave Liverpool remembering the reception he received after his last appearance against Crystal Palace.

“I had to fight my tears because I wasn’t expecting it myself,” he said. “I’m always moved because that’s when you realize it was my last game for Liverpool.
“The fact that a lot of players left before me who didn’t get something like that also makes him special to me.”
