Shohei Ohtani’s Damning Comments Prove Angels Exit Could Be Imminent

Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani has admitted it’s hard to stay motivated on a losing team, which is very bad news for Los Angeles’ chances of keeping him.

The Angels opted not to deal Shohei Ohtani at the MLB trade deadline, but there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to keep him once he reaches free agency in 2024.

Ohtani will be looking for a huge contract when the time comes. Even if Los Angeles can afford the two-way star, his inability to compete for the playoffs may ultimately hamper any contract offers.

Ohtani’s recent comments don’t paint an optimistic picture for the Angels.

“Staying motivated in this way is hard,” Ohtani said through an interpreter, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Ohtani was asked about the Angels not being playoff contenders. It was this lack of playoff hope that saw the Los Angeles players trade at the deadline. Ohtani admitted that morale was not high.

“As a team, of course, you can’t keep playing with the high morale you had when you were aiming for the playoffs,” he said.

The worst thing for Ohtani has to be that he is playing at a high level and it doesn’t make any difference.

“We’re not in a place where it’s good to just think that if you do what you can do in this bat or this inning, or get a result against this batter, and accumulate that and just win the game,” he said, “As a player, it’s pretty hard to know that there’s a slim chance of a win playing a part in your making the playoffs. But I think I would like to do what I have to do the best I can.

Will Ohtani be ready to give his best without team-level results for even longer?

If the angels think the answer is yes, they are extremely optimistic.
