The addition of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha this month, coupled with Ousmane Demebele’s contract extension, is expected to have a big impact on Barcelona’s squad planning ahead of the new season.
Many players are facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with Memphis Depay likely being one of them.
According to a report from Diario AS, Xavi held talks with the Dutchman during the ongoing pre-season tour in the United States. He asked the player to leave Camp Nou this summer or spend the entire 2022/23 campaign sulking on the bench.
Xavi was quite frank with Depay explaining his diminished role in the team after the arrival of Lewandowski and Raphinha.
In light of the revelation, Barcelona are open to hearing offers for Depay this summer. They are expecting a figure of around €20m but they might seem flexible considering the forward’s contract expires at the end of next season.
This basically means Depay could leave for free in 2023, something Barcelona want to avoid. Sanctioning the Dutchman’s sale this month may not only help the club generate transfer revenue but also reduce a fraction of their wage bill.
This would ultimately come in handy to help them register new signings, including Lewandowski and Raphinha. Moreover, Depay’s departure could pave the way for Lewandowski to take the number nine shirt, which is even part of his contract with Barcelona.
Premier League clubs have expressed a desire to sign Depay this summer, although the Dutchman has reportedly rejected a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United have become the latest club to consider a move for the former Lyon starlet, although whether or not the striker wants to return to Old Trafford remains to be seen.
